Holidaying by the sea wouldn’t be the same with at least one fish and chip supper!
At Chichester Self Catering we are right in the middle of the “Manhood Peninsula”, which is the lump of land South of the City of Chichester. We have 3 Harbours almost on the doorstep and lots of lovely beaches to walk on… and local fishermen to bring in the fish!
So, when you stay – there is NO excuse for partaking of the Great British fish and chip supper!
The great news is that there are some excellent local friers to keep you all happy – and if you want to bring them back home – we provide vinegar and tomato ketchup in your welcome pack too! Here’s my guide to the best of the chippies:
La Fish – 110, The Hornet, Chichester PO19 7JR 01243 775454 Has a small restaurant too and does gluten-free batter Weds – Sat, plus excellent kebabs. www.lafish.co.uk
Harry’s Fish and Chips 105a, Victoria Road, Chichester PO19 7HZ 01243 782085 www.chichesterfishandchips.co.uk
Nice Plaice 7A Orchard Parade (head to East Beach Parade, its just round the corner to the left) Selsey, Chichester, West Sussex PO20 0NS 01243 601616 Den’s Place 163 High Street, Selsey, PO20 0PZ 01243 605467
Royal Oak Fish Bar 6 Oakfield Road, East Wittering, PO20 8RP 01243 673309
You can also get fish and chips from the Riviera Restaurant in High Street, Selsey; most, if not all of the local pubs and there is a mobile van which is in Sidlesham at the football Club on a Wednesday evenings (at the other end of Keynor Lane, turn left – a few hundred yards up!); Birdham Village Hall on a Thursday evening and Hunston Village Hall on a Fryday. ;-))
To be honest, having tried all of these over time I don’t really have a favourite, although having the gluten-free batter option in Chichester is fantastic at La Fish.

So, don’t overeat, and consider NOT eating the batter as this makes up a lot of the excess fat / oil which is in the meal if you are being mindful. Some people also end up feeling bloated after the meal like this because a) there is about 10% fat which is quite slow to digest by the liver and gallbladder – makes you feel sluggish b) you may have a wheat / gluten-intolerance c) your body needs more roughage to digest the meal properly – consider having the mushy peas, or even a salad with the food.

Just in case you wanted to have fresh fish, but cook it at home, ie WET FISH – why not get it from the fishermen directly at East Beach Selsey – see this post?; or the hut at the end of Shore Road or at The Hard, Itchenor – both open during the Summer season, or go to Shaw’s, in the parade at East Wittering – a really superb fishmongers.
Julie’s Hut at East Beach, Selsey
So as you can see, we are truly blessed with a wide choice of “plaices” to get your cod, huss and haddock suppers and all those pickled onions, eggs, saveloys, scampi, pies, fried chicken and other delicacies when you stay here!
Here to make YOUR holiday a success!
