Gluten-Free, Vegan and Vegetarian Options when you come to visit.
Finding gluten-free and vegan eating out options when you are in a new town and just visiting can be traumatic and upsetting – so I hope that this will help, a lot! Please let me know!
Whether your reasons for dietary speciality is due to allergies and intolerances; your beliefs or a desire to be healthier etc. you still need to eat and should have some choices to make when you go out!
Cassons, A27 going West, near Tangmere. www.cassons.co.uk Superb food – gourmet but not at ridiculous prices! Please pre-book and state any dietary requirements and you will get a treat or two! Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free.
Real Burger Kitchen www.burgerkitchen.co.uk You wouldn’t normally think of a burger place a good option for gluten-free – but this is! Situated at the top end of South Street, on the west-side when facing The Cross it is on first floor level, close to the hiking shop.
LA Fish 119 The Hornet, Chichester, PO19 7JR Weds-Sat has gluten-free batter for fabulous fish and chips. There are more details on this post: It’s gotta be fish and chips!
www.zizzi.co.uk/food A pizza-style but quite trendy restaurant in South Street, Chichester.
The Earl of March, Lavant – this pub never disappoints! Great setting during the day overlooking the Lavant Valley.
Bill’s, North Street Bill’s will adapt their dishes to make the gluten-free, and their menu is really helpful too.
Note that the gluten free bread contains egg and therefore may not be suitable for your specific dietary needs. i.e. vegan
BREAKFAST – ask for gluten free bread
Bill’s breakfast & kids’ Bill’s breakfast
(please note that sausages and black pudding are not suitable for those with a gluten-free diet. Crispy potato is cooked in the same fryer as gluten containing products)
Montezuma’s sells tasty dairy-free chocolate, such as the Vegan Truffle Collection and the dark Sea Dog bar, which is flavoured with lime and sea salt. This Sussex-based chocolatier also sells gluten-free goodies, such as a large butterscotch milk chocolate heart.
St Martin’s Coffee House, Chichester
St Martin’s Coffee House is a friendly gem offering organic, healthy, homemade food, including a good selection of gluten-free, sugar-free and dairy-free meals. Stop by for lunch or a slice of cake in this characterful spot, where the log fire blazes in winter.
The Fox Goes Free, near Goodwood
The Fox Goes Free is a charming country pub in the village of Charlton, with oak beams, log fires and views to the South Downs. This is a great place for a cosy candlelit dinner. The tasty menu has plenty of gluten-free dishes and a few vegetarian options.
The tables at the Arun View Inn look out over the river. Pop by any day of the week for lunch or dinner and enjoy the luxury of choosing from the separate gluten-free menu, which offers seven starters, 11 mains (including one vegetarian option) and three puddings.
The Vintage Tearoom has a separate vegan menu offering delicious dairy-free savoury and sweet dishes. They also serve dreamy gluten-free and diabetic (low GI) cupcakes, which can be enjoyed in the café or, if you’re having a party, made to order and delivered to your home.
Manuka
Situated in East Street, Chichester, Manuka is a real hit with the local community for organic, vegetarian and vegan foods. Treat someone to one of the most delicious gifts money can buy – a box of Booja-Booja vegan and gluten-free truffles. As well as a great range of chocolates, Manuka sells gluten-free bread, pizza, cake, pasta and grains, and a wealth of vegan foods. Plus they have fresh organic produce including vegetables, honey, dairy etc. too. Oh, and they also stock a range of health supplements too. www.manukawholefoods.co.uk/ They are NOT open on a Saturday.
Now for VEGANS – it can be a lot more tricky than for gluten-free diets as vegetarian is frequently NOT the same as vegan – as you probably know! For those who don’t – vegan is NO animal products – so no dairy, cheese, animal-derived fats, no eggs and more…
My absolute fav at the moment for Raw, Vegan food is Loaf and Leaf – a micro-business based on The Hornet but has a stall at the fortnightly Farmers’ Market in Chichester on the 1st and 3rd Friday’s of the month. Superb desserts in particular – using raw chocolate and more. They also do main meals, savoury etc. too. www.loafandleaf.co.uk
Gaskyns at 4-6 Queens Street, Arundel has some vegan choices and of course you can ask for a special. www.gaskyns.co.uk
