Chichester Festival Theatre is a wonderful mixture of contemporary and well loved plays and programmes housed in iconic buildings which have been newly refurbished.
We are blessed with two theatres in Chichester on the same site – the Festival theatre and the Minerva Theatre – a much more intimate space.
Many of the plays which begin in these theatres go onto the West End theatres or tour the country. The local audience is as a result very knowledgeable and discerning! To be a hit they have to be good! It has also lifted the careers of many actors in the process incl Sir Lawrence Olivier – the first artistic director when it opened in 1962.
There is a Summer Season as part of the Chichester Festivities and a Winter Season with a wide variety of performances of many genre – from concerts, monologues, Shakespearean plays, contemporary and cutting-edge masterpieces.
The theatre itself is set in parkland and is hexagonal and the stage is set protruding into the audience so you get really up close and personal – amazing for a large audience.
The Minerva Theatre is much smaller than its neighbour and even more intimate – and puts on really specialist plays at times – always memorable.
